"New" Approach to Breast Reconstruction isn't All That "New"

September 21, 2018

There are two different ways that implants can be placed surgically into the chest. One way is "above the muscle" and the other is "under the muscle". Placing the implant above the muscles that make up the chest is a more invasive technique, and generally results in longer healing time. Placing the implant above the pectoral muscles results in a more noticeable, projected result.

The title of the article implies that placing the implant over the muscle is a new technique, but it's actually an old technique being revisited. It seems surgeons can't decide which method is best, and we believe the method should depend on the individual.
